Project history:

The history of the city dates back to the beginning of the XIX century, then on the site of modern Gorno-Altaisk there was a small settlement of Teleuts.

In 1824, the first Russian settlers moved here from Biysk and founded the village of Ulala. Its further development was closely connected with the work of the Altai spiritual mission. In 1831, the main camp begins to work in Ulala, missionaries and priests gather here. Later, some Biyan merchants moved to the village. For several decades it has become a major shopping center Biysk district of Tomsk province. In 1918, the Council of peasants 'and soldiers' deputies was assembled and Karakorum County was formed with the center in Ulala. Soviet power was restored in 1919, when a partisan detachment occupied the village. After the Civil war, the Oyrot Autonomous region was formed. In 1922, the administrative center of the new region was proclaimed the village of Ulala. In 1928, the settlement of Ulala was transformed into a city. In the next two decades, the city of Ulala changed its name twice. In 1932, the town was renamed Oirot-Turu. In 1948, The oyrot Autonomous region was renamed Gorno-Altaisk, the city of oyrot-Tura in Gorno-Altaisk.
